Arena Wars Fight Night

The Main Event of the Arena Wars Fight Night featured two welterweight fighters in a rematch of a fight that ended in a Split Draw in January. In that fight one judge scored the bout a draw, of the other two, one favored Ponce, the other Watley. As was seen on that night, records mean little in a well matched fight.
The opening round of this fight was much like the last in that Watley was aggressive and throwing more punches. Ponce was patient, looking for opportunities to follow his jab with a right to the body. The second round saw Ponce take advantage of being in close as he landed hard combinations to Watley's body early in the round and did so again as the round drew to a close. Watley looked to take advantage of his reach, moving to create space while throwing his left.
Ponce upped his pressure in the third round and that meant that Watley had fewer chances to land scoring punches. Ponce kept throwing body shots, often in the form of left - right combinations to keep Watley moving. Watley shifted the momentum some in the early portions of the fourth round, and that forced Ponce to counter punch. As the round entered the final minute, Ponce regained control and closed the round landing body shots.
Watley had a strong fifth round as he applied pressure to Ponce, forcing him to move away from Watley's hard right which often came as a result of a long reach. The final round was close as each man took advantage of his strengths. That meant that Ponce looked to land combinations to the body while Watley looked to create some distance and fire his left. Ponce gained an edge by landing the heavier shots in the round.
After six rounds one judge scored the fight even at 57, the other two scored it 58-56 in favor of Ponce who would claim the majority decision win. |

McMillian's right connects to Wood's chin |
The co main featured bout matched unbeaten Gerald Powell-Wood against once beaten Mike McMillian in a five round super middleweight bout. Wood looked impressive in his two wins as a professional, scoring a knockout win in his last appearance. McMillian came in to the fight looking to get back on track after dropping his last fight. Stylistically, this was a very good fight as Wood is an all out action puncher, while McMillian is patient, looking for an opening to land heavy.
The opening round was true to form for both men as Wood thew wide hard punches looking to target McMillian's body. McMillian focused his attack on Wood's body to slow his pressure. McMillian had a solid second round as he kept pressuring Wood, keeping him on the move while landing his left to Wood's lanky body. As the round neared the end, Wood shot a right that connected to McMillian's chin.
The third round was close as each man was able to land scoring shots. McMillian racked up points with a right hand that connected to Wood's body and head, while Wood scored using his reach advantage. Wood upped the aggression in the fourth round, stepping to McMillian and closing the distance. That forced McMillian to cover up to block punches which meant he was unable to throw many in return.
McMillian controlled he action of the final round keeping Wood with his back on the ropes while throwing punches to Wood's body. When Wood slipped off the ropes and into the center of the ring, McMillian focused his attack on Wood's chin, and he caught him a few times.
After five rounds one judge scored the fight 49-46, the other two scored it 48-47, all in favor of Mike McMillian who would claim the unanimous decision win. |
Unbeaten Pedro Torres stepped in to face veteran Dylan Carlson in a four round super welterweight bout. Torres has not lost many rounds in his brief four fight professional career. Carlson has proven to be a tough opponent that has the ability to go the distance.
Carlson controlled the first half of the opening round, using his jab to keep Torres backing up and limiting Torres' ability to fire punches back. Torres made an adjustment at the midpoint, moving to create angles that enabled him to shoot and land punches to Carlson's body. Torres' hard right body shots closed the round and gave him an advantage going into round two, Carlson stayed just out of Torres' reach in the opening moments of the second round, choosing moments to step in and fire quick shots to Torres' body. Torres countered by stepping toward Carlson, closing the distance and throwing combinations to Carlson's body. Those body shots began to break Carlson down, and as the round entered the final minute, Torres backed Carlson into the corner. From there, Torres landed a hard left to Carlson's body that dropped him to the canvas. The referee reached he count of ten before Carlson could stand, and the fight came to an end.
Torres would remain unbeaten, scoring the knockout win at 2:24 of the second round. |

Pineda's left dropped Mitchell |
Cesar Pineda and Micha Mitchell opened the show in a featherweight bout scheduled for four rounds. Each man was looking for his initial win as a professional, having dropped their debut fights to tough opponents.
Mitchell answered the opening bell stepping across the ring and aggressively throwing punches at Pineda's head. Pineda avoided many of those punches and countered by throwing hard punches that often landed to Mitchell's body. As the round passed the midpoint, Pineda backed Mitchell into the corner and land landed a right to his body, followed by a quick left that dropped Mitchell to the canvas. The referee reached the count of ten before Mitchell rose, and the fight was waved to an end.
Pineda would score the knockout win at 1:40 of the opening round. |
